The Ceramic Studio

Every time there is a visitor in the studio, there comes a shower of praises with a how-did-you-do-this! And my rhetoric is - don’t ask me how I made those mugs, or those vases, ask me how I got that kiln up, ask me how I got my first pottery wheel! My pottery studio germinated from the desire to be able to experiment with my clay without being dependent on external factors! I believe you can not learn pottery in a few classes or workshops or by reading those books and watching tons of videos. I am myself a self-taught potter and I feel it is technically an ongoing-process. With each batch of ceramics you learn that there is so much more to learn - the whole chemistry and physics behind it is too much to understand in a lifetime! I felt the urge to set up my own space and work on those permutations and combinations to be able to get that starting point where you can call yourself a potter after eight years. Pottery studio is a lot like a kitchen, where once you get a gas stove, you feel the need to get an oven! You might have all veggies but you always need more spices! I have a small gas kiln along with a few racks, many-many glazes and a pottery wheel - with of course 100 kilos of stoneware clay. The studio boasts of clay in all phases - wet clay, trimmed work, leather hard work, bisque work and glazed work- it literally speaks of the chaotic potter’s head! But at the end of the day, there is something magical about holding the clay in your hands, it has the ability to give you that patience along with the resilience that one gets surprised to know that he bears within! My pottery studio is a physical form of my determination, my ability to stand against the odds, my patience to create art - my desire to give shape and life to a lump of clay.
